Path.Finder development in Salisbury
- Interest in the development of a clinical system containing clinical
information, such as guidelines and protocols, shared across primary
and secondary care began in 1996. Integrated Care Pathways involving
both primary and secondary care have been produced since 1997.
- However, work on shared information systems did not begin on this
until late 1999, when resources became available.
- The Integrated Clinical Information Database (ICID) Project began
in July 2000 to manage the development of this system.
- Following a visit from the Path.Finder team in June 2000, the steering
group decided to join the Path.Finder consortium, which happened in
October 2000.
Work is currently underway in the following areas:
- Determining exactly what should be included on the system and how
it should be displayed and accessed.
- Collating and gathering the information: this has meant substantial
work, as until now there has not been a central source within the Trust
for patient information, clinical protocols/policies, clinical guidelines,
referral guidelines, training courses, nor a current, up to date services
directory. Sub-projects have been established to collate and assess
the quality of this information.
- Designing and building the system in terms of IT, and getting the
infrastructure in place for the GPs to access the system externally
via the NHS.net.
- Establishing processes for the development and production of new clinical
information within the Trust and PCG.
We hope to have this work completed and the system ready to be piloted
in April 2001.
The Future
- Following an evaluation of the pilot, we hope to begin rolling out
the system to all wards and departments within the Trust and to all
GP practices in South Wiltshire PCG in autumn 2001.
- Through the establishment of this system, we hope that it will encourage
clinicians to produce referral guidelines that cross primary care, in
order that it will make referrals more appropriate.
- We hope that the system will link to an electronic booking system
in the future.
- A further aim is to link to other local GP practices, which are in
neighbouring Primary Care Trusts.
