Path.Finder Development in Sandwell

Sandwell Healthcare NHS Trust is a 600-bed district general hospital situated just north east of Birmingham. It serves a population of 293 000.

By 1995, a number of guidelines and care pathways had been developed within the Trust, but clinicians needed a reliable method to disseminate, access, assimilate and store them. Path.Finder was the ideal vehicle for this, and so in 1996 the Trust joined the Path.Finder Consortium.

We initially started with an electronic 'book' of clinical guidelines and details of various departments using Voyager software. We have recently however employed a Web Development company to develop a bespoke 'content management system' which functions essentially as the Trust Intranet. The site is database driven (MySQL) and can therefore contain an infinite volume of information combined with a state of the art search facility.

The new site includes clinical guidelines, home pages for departments and services, information for patients (leaflets and support group web sites), knowledge resources (web site links, on-line journals, library holdings), and clinical governance information (clinical effectiveness, clinical risk & training). At present, only Trust staff have access to the Intranet, but this will change in the near future when the local GPs will be given access.
